It is believed that these “defeat devices” were fitted to hundreds of thousands of vehicles manufactured in the UK between 2007 – 2020. When driven these vehicles emit up to 40 times over the permitted legal limit of Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) into our atmosphere. This is extremely damaging, as increased levels of NOx contribute to air pollution which is reported to be the largest environmental risk to UK public health and is linked to as many as 64,000 early deaths a year!
